Cyanotype Workshops

Inspired by Anna Atkins, creating cyanotypes allows us to leave our natural areas as we find them by collecting shadows of natural objects on light sensitive paper.

Erin has led workshops at ARTLINK Contemporary Gallery , Science Central and ACRES Land Trust. As an established art educator, she guides participants on a fun adventure exploring the origins of cyanotype and creating their own. Participants are provided with a portable cyanotype kit and instructed in ways to preserve nature as they document its beautiful forms.

Resources: These links include information about the science and history of cyanotypes.

How to use your portable cyanotype kit:

Nature Print Paper
1. Explore your favorite trails on a sunny day and select objects.
2. Carefully remove a sheet of paper from the foil envelope.
3. Place objects on the blue side of the paper.
4. Expose to the sun until the blue paper turns pale (2 minutes)
5. Remove objects and protect the paper from the sun.
At home:
1. Remove exposed paper from the foil envelope.
2. Soak in a container of water for 1 minute.
3. Dry flat
NOTE: the blue will deepen and image will sharpen in 24 hours. A splash of hydrogen peroxide in the rinse container will immediately process the image. Have fun - it’s magical!

Have a wonderful adventure creating images in nature. Thank you for joining us!
